Revenge is never a straight line. It's a forest. And like a forest, it's easy to lose your way. To get lost. To forget where you came in.

–Hattori Hanzō to Beatrix Kiddo at the end of Chapter 5: Showdown at House of Blue Leaves.

Biography[]

Hattori Hanzō (服部韓蔵) is a master Japanese sword-smith. He is renown for the quality of his katanas.

Past[]

At some point in the past, Bill was Hanzō's student. 28 years prior to the events of Vol. 1, Hattori took a blood oath to never again make "instruments of death." After retirement from smithing, Hattori became a businessman, manning his own sushi store.

Kiddo's sword[]

Hattori Hanzō is the finest swordsmith in the world; however, he has not created a new sword in over a quarter-century because he feels guilty for making instruments used to kill humans. In realizing Beatrix Kiddo wants "Japanese steel" to dispatch his former student, Bill, who has displeased his former master by his dishonorable actions, Hanzō spends a month crafting what he considers his finest sword. He presents it to her, saying that if even God gets in her way, "God will be cut."

When Bill asks Beatrix how she got him to make Beatrix's sword, she tells him that all she had to do was drop his name which Bill admits would be enough, indicating he knows how much Hanzō is displeased with him.

Trivia[]

  • Quentin Tarantino stated in the supplementary material on the Kill Bill DVD that the character was named in tribute to Sonny Chiba's former role as Hattori Hanzō (the real-life historical 16th-century Samurai) in "Shadow Warriors" ("Kage no Gundan"), and that, while not stated on camera, the modern Hattori Hanzō is a descendant of the Hattori Hanzō that appeared in "Shin Kage no Gundan".
